Day by Day Itinerary

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Later in the evening, we will have a pre-departure meeting regarding the details of your trip.

In the morning, we will pick you from your hotel and then drive to the airport for our scenic flight to Tumlingtar. During the 35 minutes flight we can witness the mesmerizing snow-covered mountain like Mt. Makalu, Ganesh Himal, and Mt. Kanchenjunga. After the awe-inspiring flight, our adventure transitions to a picturesque off road drive from Tumlingtar to Num village, where you’ll relish the serene vistas of the lush forested hillsides and traverse through charming villages such as Khandbari, Chichira, and Hururu.

Embarking on our first trekking day, we face a moderate challenge due to steep descents and ascents. We start our day with a steep descent along a trail of large stone steps, taking us through fragrant cardamom fields towards the Arun River. Upon crossing a suspension bridge over the river, we transition to a demanding uphill climb. The path navigates us through dense juniper and rhododendron forests, and as we traverse several villages, we eventually reach our destination of Seduwa, a gateway to Makalu Barun National Park. This village is inhabited by Sherpas, Chhetris, Gurungs and Rais.

Our trek proceeds with a gradual ascent, leading us through the enchanting bamboo and rhododendron forests. The meticulously constructed stone pathways guide us further, taking us past quaint villages such as Mane Gaun and Chakse Danda. Along the way, we traverse fields of millet, rice, and cardamom, crossing several streams. Our trek involves ascending stone steps that ultimately lead us to Tashi Gaon, a Sherpa village nestled within this valley. Tashi Gaon marks the final permanent settlement on our route.

The trek from Tashi Gaun to Kauma Dada is strenuous, requiring a challenging walk on stone steps that wind along the ridge. The trail gradually emerges from the deep forest after passing through enchanting rhododendron and oak forest. You’ll come across a few makeshift shepherd houses along the road, suggesting the area’s temporary use for grazing. En route we are rewarded with a panoramic vista of a snow-capped mountain. Khongma, at an elevation of 3,500 meters, is a meadow where locals graze their yaks, sheep, and goats.

Today is a rest day which crucial for acclimatizing our bodies to the higher altitude. This period allows us to adjust gradually and more comfortably. On this day, we have the option to explore the village at a leisurely pace, absorbing the local culture and surroundings. Alternatively, we can choose to embark on a hike to Khongma La and return, for better acclimatization.

We will have challenging day ahead as we will need to cross four high passes and a Lake namely Khongma La (3890m), Tutu La (4055m), Shipton’s Pas (4125m), Kalo Pokhari (4022m) and Keke La (4170m). The captivating allure of the high Himalayas and the surrounding landscape will undoubtedly enhance the pleasure of our hike. We start our hike ascending on stone steps through rhododendron trees to reach Khongma La. After a brief descent, we venture onward, tracing a ridge that eventually ushers us to Tutu La. Subsequently, we proceed along the rocky path, ascending to Shipton La. Along the way, we encounter mani walls adorned with sacred mantras and colorful prayer flags, encapsulating the spiritual essence of the region.

Descending further, we approach the pristine Kalo Pokhari. This holy lake holds special significance as it draws hundreds of pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival. Our ascent continues towards Keke La, presenting us with sweeping vistas of the majestic snow-clad mountain that envelop the horizon. Finally our path descends steeply to reach Dobate. We are treated to captivating views of Chamlang (7319m), Peak 6 (6524m), Peak 7 (6758m), and other magnificent Himalayan peaks that grace the horizon from the vantage point of Dobate.

We start trekking downhill through dense rhododendron forests before crossing Barun River. Negotiating a section with the potential of landslides, we traverse cautiously along the river’s edge. Crossing a sturdy wooden bridge, we continue our trek along an undulating path that leads us towards Yangle Kharka. As we journey onward, the picturesque panorama unveils glimpses of imposing peaks such as Chanlang and Tutse, while the enchanting sight of a cascading waterfall adds to the allure of the landscape. Yangle Kharka is a flat area with lush green meadows.

Leaving Yangle Kharka behind, we venture through the forested path, crossing several small streams over wooden bridges and traversing yak pastures until we reach Merek. Continuing further, we walk across moraines, passing through quaint villages and eventually arriving at Langmale Kharka. The views here are truly captivating, with the presence of Peak 7 and a vibrant mani wall adorned with fluttering prayer flags.

The trail ascends gradually, surrounded by icy glaciers and the breathtaking presence of the Himalayas. Our trail leads us to Shershong, from where we carry on. Alternatively we can hike to Barun Glacier, offering another perspective of the rugged beauty of the region and serene Barun Pokhari.

After thoroughly absorbing the grandeur of this magnificent panorama and allowing ourselves to truly appreciate our achievement, we begin our journey back, retracing our steps to return to Yangle Kharka. As we make our way towards Yangri Kharka, we descend through scanty forest and rocky trails and passing by the small settlements of Shershong, Langmale Kharka, and Merek.

Returning along the familiar trail and surroundings, we make our way back to our camp at Dobate.

A challenging and long day lies ahead as we embark on the journey to Khongma Danda, traversing high mountain passes including Keke La, Kalo Pokhara, Shipton La, Tutu La, and Khongma La.

After breakfast, leaving Makalu Barun National Park we descend from Khongma Danda down to Dhara Kharka and then to Tashigaon.
