About Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, also known as the Dhaulagiri Round Trek, takes its name from the awe-inspiring Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), the seventh highest peak in the world. This trekking route is categorized by the Nepal government as a restricted trekking area so require special permits for entry. This trek encircles the massive Dhaulagiri and is located on the northwest side of the Annapurna Himalaya range. It is renowned as an expedition-like adventure in western Nepal. The trek is tailored for seasoned mountain trekkers who are seeking an unparalleled adventure.

The trail winds through villages and terraced farmlands, following the contours of rivers, weaving through dramatic gorges, and crossing glaciers. It offers a unique opportunity to explore Nepal’s most striking and picturesque regions of more frequented trekking routes. Trekkers need to have a high level of physical fitness for this trek. They must cross high passes over 5000m. However, with acclimatization, trekkers can enjoy breathtaking vistas of prominent peaks like Dhaulagiri-I, Dhaulagiri-II, Dhaulagiri-III, Dhaulagiri-V, and Tukuche Peak.

Similarly, starting from Pokhara, you begin the journey in the village of Beni, tracing the course of the Myagdi River. It gracefully winds through the stunning landscapes of the Kali Gandaki gorge. The path gradually ascends, meandering through charming villages and advancing towards the Italian Base Camp, for a well-deserved rest day. After that, the route takes you to the setting of the Dhaulagiri Base Camp, with an overnight stop at Glacier Camp. Following another day of rest for acclimatization, you ascend to the summit of the French Pass (5,360m), and then descend into the Hidden Valley. The trail then presents trekkers with a final ascent to Dhampus Pass (5,244m). From there, the path connects to the Annapurna Circuit, ultimately leading to Jomsom and, finally, back to Pokhara.

In conclusion, the 19-day Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek provides a remarkable adventure through some of Nepal’s most dramatic landscapes, delivering an unforgettable experience to those who are ready to face the physical challenges and who are inspired by the stunning natural beauty of the region.

Day by Day Itinerary

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Later in the evening, we will have a pre-departure meeting regarding the details of your trip.

In the morning, we’ll collect you from your hotel and head towards Pokhara, a beautiful city. The scenic journey follows the Prithvi Highway, running alongside Trisuli and Marshyangdi Rivers, passing through charming villages, and offering views of Mt. Manaslu and the Annapurna Mountains. Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city, is known for its tranquil charm and vibrant energy. After reaching your hotel, you can freshen up and leave your belongings. The day presents an opportunity to explore Pokhara’s lakeside area, a bustling zone with eateries, shops, and cafes, all framed by the stunning Phewa Lake. Stroll along the lakeshore, relish the views, or unwind in the serene atmosphere.

Following breakfast, we embark on a picturesque journey to Darbang via Beni Bazaar. Along the way, we’ll pass through numerous charming villages, traverse lush hills, catch glimpses of snow-capped mountains, and follow the course of rivers. Once we reach Darbang, you’ll have the chance to explore the village and its enchanting surroundings.

Our trekking adventure begins today. We set out by crossing a suspension bridge and embarking on an ascent towards Dharapani. This village is home to Gurung and Chettri communities. Weather permitting, we’ll be treated to our initial sight of the impressive Dhaulagiri massif, Gurja Peak (7195m), and Putha Hunchuli (7250m). Our journey continues as we trek along the ridge overlooking the Sibang River, ultimately leading us to the village of Sibang.

Our trek starts with a gradual descent towards Gatti Khola. Upon crossing the suspension bridge, we begin an ascent to Muri Gaun. This village holds the distinction of being the confluence point of two rivers: Myagdi and Dhara. Subsequently, we cross a series of suspension bridges over Dhora Khola, descending through terraced fields and sparsely populated settlements. Our journey leads us to Naura village, completing this leg of the trek.

We follow the path along the Myagdi Khola’s edge, traversing grassy hills and steep slopes until we reach Bagar. Further we descend gradually through terraced fields and verdant forests, leading us to the remote village of Jyardan. From there, we ascend through dense woods, finally arriving at Lipse. Continuing our journey, we ascend once more through the thick forest to reach the tranquil settlement of Dobhan.

Leaving Dobang behind, the path leads you to Sallaghari, following the dense forest of bamboo and rhododendron along the banks of the Myagdi River. Along the route, we will cross a wooden bridge over a stream and pass through grassy pastures. As you continue, the trail ascends steeply, navigating through several challenging landslide areas. Just before reaching Sallaghari, you’ll have the opportunity to admire a stunning waterfall that adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Today as we hike towards Italian Base Camp, our path leads us through a diverse range of forests, starting with pine trees, rhododendron, and birch. As we continue, the landscape gradually changes, and we find ourselves above the tree line. Here, the surroundings feature heather, juniper, and azaleas, painting the terrain with their vibrant colors. Further, we hike alongside the glacial deposits of Chhonbarban Glacier. Crossing the river multiple times, you’ll eventually arrive at Italian Base Camp. Here, you’ll be greeted by awe-inspiring vistas, with towering snow-covered mountains like Tsaurabong Peak, Manapathi and the majestic Dhaulagiri I (8,172m), enveloping the surroundings in their grandeur.

Having reached at the altitude of 3660m, we take a rest day for acclimatization to the higher altitude. It’s recommended to remain moderately active. You could opt for a small hike around the Italian Base Camp or choose to ascend a small ridge leading to the American Base Camp. This gradual approach enhances your body’s adjustment to the altitude and minimizes the risk of altitude-related issues.

On this day of trekking, we are faced with a more demanding challenge, involving steep uphill and downhill sections, as well as navigating rocky terrain. The trail also requires us to cross glaciers and make our way through narrow canyons. However, the inspiring vistas of mountains like Dhaulagiri, Dhampus Peak, Manapathi Peak, and Tsaurabong Peak serve as motivation to persevere along the path.

In order to gear up for the challenging trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp tomorrow, we have designated today as a rest day. During this time, we will engage in a hike around the glacier area to acclimate ourselves further.

This day marks the pinnacle of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek as you venture towards the base camp of the imposing Dhaulagiri mountain range. Departing from the glacier camp, we navigate a rugged path along the moraine-covered glacier that leads to Dhaulagiri Base Camp. Upon arrival, a breathtaking panorama unfolds before us, showcasing the majestic presence of Dhaulagiri I (8,172m), II (7,751m), IV (7,618m), and Tukuche Peak. The scene is embellished by a remarkable icefall cascading down from the ridgeline of Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle.

Considering the altitude we’ve already ascended to, it’s prudent to dedicate a rest day in the vicinity of the base camp for acclimatization. Utilizing this day, you can embark on explorations around the base camp area, taking in the surrounding landscapes and further acclimating to the altitude. This precautionary measure ensures a safer and more enjoyable trekking experience.

Our journey today takes us to the highest point of our Dhaulagiri Circuit trek, the formidable French Pass, standing at an impressive altitude of 5,360 meters. This stretch is undoubtedly long and demanding, presenting a significant challenge. However, the rewards that await are truly remarkable –a breathtaking panoramic view unfolds before us, showcasing majestic peaks including Tukuche Peak, Tashi Kang, and the imposing Dhaulagiri I, among others. As we descend from the pass, we are greeted by a serene grassy meadow, which will be our campsite for the night in the Hidden Valley. This picturesque location offers a peaceful respite after the exhilarating climb.

Having crossed the challenging passes, a day of rest becomes essential for recuperation. This day grants you the flexibility to tailor your activities based on your preferences and energy levels. You can choose to explore the Hidden Valley, embarking on a brief hike to a ridge that unveils a breathtaking panorama of the hidden valley and the majestic snow capped mountains. Alternatively, for those with mountaineering expertise, there is the possibility of ascending Dhampus Peak (6,012m), which require additional permits and expenses.

Refreshed and revitalized, we embark on a demanding trek from Hidden Valley to Yak Kharka via Dhampus Pass. This day is marked by a series of ups and downs as the trail descends through the enchanting Hidden Valley before ascending once more to conquer the trek’s ultimate significant pass, Dhampus Pass. At the summit of this pass, you’ll be greeted by vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the wind. The panorama is nothing short of spectacular, with Tukuche and Dhampus Peaks taking center stage, accompanied by the impressive Annapurna Range. After basking in the awe-inspiring scenery, our journey continues with a steep descent along a trail that traverses avalanche-prone slopes, ultimately leading us to Yak Kharka.

Today, we relish the advantages of lower altitudes as our bodies respond positively and we immerse ourselves in the enchanting forests of pine and rhododendron. Our path leads us on a steep descent, guiding us to the charming village of Marpha. Nestled alongside the banks of the Kaligandaki River, this village boasts whitewashed houses and neatly paved streets. Marpha is renowned for its bountiful apple orchards and is also home to an ancient monastery, adding to the village’s allure.

We end our trek at Marpha and take a drive all the way passing through charming villages such as Tukuche,Kalapani, Lete, Ghasa, Dana before reaching Tatopani. Tatopani means “hot water” in Nepali. You can soak in a natural hot spring to relieve your aching body.

On the final day of our trip, we again drive back to Pokhara. Upon arrival at Pokhara you can explore the charming lakeside area which is a bustling hub filled with restaurants, shops, and cafes, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Phewa Lake. You can take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore, enjoy the scenic views, or simply relax and take in the peaceful ambiance.
