The Khayer Lake trek, alternatively known as the Khopra Ridge Trek or Khopra Trek, stands as a hidden gem within the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area. Renowned for its solitude, this trek provides a refreshing escape from the crowds. The highlight of this trek is the Khopra Ridge (3640m) itself, revealing breathtaking panoramic vistas of the encircling mountains encompassing Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhare, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. At an elevation of 4500m, Khayer Lake is another highlight which revered as a sacred lake nestled amidst snow-capped peaks.
In fact, this route, relatively new and less traveled which has earned its distinction as a prime off-the-beaten-track exploration within the Annapurna Region. As we pass through Gurung and Magar village, we can experience the culture and traditions of these ethnic groups. The region’s diverse flora and fauna further enrich our experience. The trail leads us through lush forests adorned with oak, pine, and the captivating rhododendron, particularly vibrant during the spring season which makes the landscape a picturesque and captivating subject for photography.
Embarking on The Khayer Lake trek commences with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, followed by a hike to the famed Gurung village of Ghandruk. Our journey proceeds to Tadapani, from where we diverge onto the less-traveled trail towards Dobato, Shristibung, and ultimately Khopra Danda. Of course, our route will take you to the famous Poon Hill and Muldai View Point, both of which offer unparalleled sunrise vistas. As we retrace our way back to Pokhara, we have the option to return via Poon Hill or consider the Tatopani route. Really, this trail is quite enjoyable to walk as the path winds through pristine forests, ascends into alpine meadows, and culminates in the barren, high-altitude plateaus. This trek encapsulates a rich blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and the thrill of traversing lesser-known terrain.
Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Later in the evening, we will have a pre-departure meeting regarding the details of your trip.
In the morning, we’ll come to pick you at your hotel and start our journey towards Pokhara, a beautiful city. The drive will be scenic as we head west on the Prithvi Highway. Along the way, we’ll follow the Trisuli and Marshyangdi Rivers and pass through charming villages. The Mt. Manaslu and Annapurna Mountain ranges will be visible in the distance, adding to the breathtaking scenery. As we arrive in Pokhara, the second-largest city in Nepal, you’ll be captivated by its tranquil beauty and lively atmosphere. This city serves as a starting point for many treks in the Annapurna region, attracting both trekkers and adventurers. After checking in at your hotel and freshening up, we’ll dedicate the remaining day to discovering the delightful lakeside area of Pokhara. The lakeside is bustling with activity, offering a variety of restaurants, shops, and cafes, all with the stunning backdrop of Phewa Lake. You can take a leisurely walk by the lakeshore, relish the scenic vistas, or simply unwind and soak in the serene surroundings.
After breakfast, we take 2 and half hours scenic drive from Pokhara to Kimche, starting point of the trek. We embark on our first day of trek towards Ghandruk through rice terraces, teahouses, and stupas. This village is inhabited by Gurungs who have rich culture and traditions. Mountains such as Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna (7455m), Annapurna III (7755m), and Fishtail can be seen from this village. We can visit Gurung Culture Museum and Handicraft Center if you’re interested.
As we set forth on the second day of our trek, we embark on an ascent towards the west, leading us to the charming destination of Tadapani. Today’s hike is realtively short. Our route takes us through lush forests of rhododendrons, Oak, bamboo and magnolia. Along the way, our efforts are rewarded with glimpses of the majestic Annapurna range.
Leaving the most trodden path of this region, we take on the off-beaten path that leads us through rhododendron forest, waterfalls and streams to Dobato. With every step we take, the enchanting presence of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges accompanies us.
In pursuit of one of the trek’s most captivating moments, we set out early in the morning toward the Muldai View Point (3,637m). A 45-minute uphill hike from Dobato leads us to this vantage point, which rewards us with a breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas. As the sun’s first rays grace the horizon, an exquisite panorama unfolds before us, featuring Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), Mt. Machhapuchhre, Annapurna Range, the Ganesh Himal Range, and an array of other magnificent peaks. With our hearts filled with awe, we retrace our steps back to our lodging. After breakfast, we continue our trek towards Chistibang. The descending path to lower Chistibang leads us through enchanting forests and serene pastures, followed by an ascent that guides us to our ultimate destination of upper Chistibang.
Embarking on today’s trek, we trek along the ridge that treats us to the magnificent vista of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. We will be climbing steep up on the ridge through the alpine forests and charming pastures to reach Khopra Danda. We can see Kali Gandaki River as it winds its way through the world’s deepest and awe-inspiring George of Kali Gandaki from the vantage point of Khopra Danda.
Today will be the highlight of our trek as we will hike towards sacred Khayer Lake. The day’s hike will test our endurance, stretching our limits as we ascend the steep slopes with determination. Our path will be long and demanding, requiring both physical and mental fortitude. However, the rewards that await us at the sacred Khayer Lake make every step worthwhile. Nestled in the embrace of the towering Annapurna South (7,219 meters), this pristine lake exudes an aura of sanctity. Encircled by the majestic mountains, the lake’s serene presence is a sight to behold. For Hindus, it holds profound spiritual significance, making it a cherished pilgrimage destination. After taking in the scenery, we will retrace our way back to Khopra Danda.
Leaving Khopra Danda behing, today’s path leads us on a steady descent through the enchanting embrace of rhododendron and oak forests. Our trek continues amidst the backdrop of terraced hills and charming villages, each step taking us closer to our destination Swanta. Upon arrival at the village, you can visit local school and monastery.
Today marks our reconnection with the well-trodden path of the Annapurna region as we trek towards Ghorepani. Our route descends through lush forests, traditional villages, terraced fields and rivers with a suspension bridge leading to the charming destination Ghorepani. This village has gained popularity among trekkers due to its strategic location and unique charm. It is a popular village inhabited by Gurung and Magar people.
Today promises to be one of the highlights of our trek. Our day begins before the break of dawn as we rise early and embark on a revitalizing hike to Poon Hill, an elevation of 3210 meters. The ascent to Poon Hill takes approximately 45 minutes, and the anticipation of witnessing the sunrise over the Himalayas fills us with excitement. Upon reaching the summit of Poon Hill, we are greeted by a breathtaking spectacle as the first rays of sunlight paint the sky with hues of orange and gold. The panoramic view that unfolds before us is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The mountains we can see from this place are Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurnas, Machhapuchhre (6,997m), Manaslu (8,163m) and many more. After savoring the beauty and tranquility of Poon Hill, we retrace our steps back to our hotel. After enjoying our last breakfast in the mountain, we continue our trek which will lead us through lush rhododendron forest, pastures and farmland before arriving Ulleri. Our vehicle will be waiting for us to take back to Pokhara, the city that welcomed us at the beginning of our journey.
