In the evening, we’ll take a 15 to 20-minute stroll from your hotel to reach Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage site. Found in the heart of old Kathmandu at Basantapur, this historic square showcases a captivating collection of palaces, courtyards, and temples that were constructed during the Malla era. Among the notable structures within the square are the Hanuman Dhoka Royal Palace, which holds great historical significance, the majestic Taleju Temple soaring to a height of over 40 meters, Kumari Ghar, the residence of the Living Goddess Kumari, Ashok Vinayak, also known as Kathmandu Ganesh, a temple with a unique design, and Kal Bhairav, the deity symbolizing wrath. The city’s name is derived from Kasthamandap, a massive pagoda structure said to have been crafted from a single tree. Throughout the reign of the Malla kings, Durbar Square has remained the focal point for the city’s social, religious, and political activities.
Afterward, we’ll make our way back to the hotel through Asan, a primary marketplace of the city since ancient times. Asan is known for its wide array of products, including food items, spices, textiles, electronics, and precious metals. This bustling area also serves as a popular attraction for tourists due to its intriguing architecture and delightful atmosphere.
We begin our day with a 45-minute drive to Bhaktapur, a historic city renowned for its rich cultural heritage, impressive temples, and exceptional craftsmanship in wood, metal, and stone. In Bhaktapur, our exploration unfolds across four main squares – Durbar, Taumadhi, Dattatreya, and Pottery. Within these squares, we’ll encounter renowned landmarks such as the Golden Gate, the Palace of 55 Windows, the Lion’s Gate, the majestic Nyatpola Temple (the tallest of its kind in Nepal), the Bhairab Temple, and the Dattatreya Temple.
Following that, we continue our journey towards Changunarayan, passing through lush forests, local farmlands, and picturesque Nepalese villages. This drive provides an authentic and immersive glimpse into rural life in Nepal. The pagoda-style Hindu temple at Changunarayan, dating back to the Lichhavi Dynasty, pays homage to Vishnu in his Narayan incarnation and ranks among Nepal’s most ancient temples.
Subsequently, we make our way to Nagarkot, a well-known tourist destination that attracts visitors from both within Nepal and abroad. Nagarkot is renowned for its breathtaking views of sunrise and sunset over the Himalayan mountain range.
This morning begins early with a trip to the Nagarkot viewing tower, where we may witness a magnificent sunrise over the Langtang mountain range, weather permitting Mount Everest as well.
We then drive out of Kathmandu valley towards tranquil town Pokhara. The journey takes us westward along the Prithvi Highway, tracing the Trisuli and Marshyangdi Rivers and passing through quaint villages that dot the landscape. Mt. Manaslu and the Annapurna Mountain ranges decorate the distant horizon. Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city, greets us with its tranquil charm and lively energy. After reaching your hotel and stowing your belongings, we have the opportunity to freshen up. We then take a boat out on to the Fewa lake to visit Tal Barahi Temple. The rest of the day can be spent discovering the delightful lakeside area of Pokhara. This vibrant hub is brimming with eateries, shops, and cafes against the backdrop of the breathtaking Phewa Lake. You can take a leisurely lakeside stroll, soak in the scenic beauty, or simply unwind in the peaceful surroundings.
Our day of exploration in Pokhara includes the following highlights:
David Falls (Patale Chhango): Located on the southern side of the Pokhara valley, David Falls, also known as Patale Chhango locally, is a magnificent waterfall. It’s formed by the stream flowing from Fewa Lake as it cascades down rocky terrain, creating a stunning spectacle and carving potholes along its path.
Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: Situated directly across from Davis Fall, the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave is a significant attraction in Pokhara. This cave serves as a conduit for the water from Davis Fall to flow through, making it a unique and fascinating natural formation.
World Peace Pagoda: Perched atop a hill on the southern banks of Phewa Lake, the World Peace Pagoda is a grand Buddhist stupa. It not only stands as an impressive monument but also offers a fantastic vantage point, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna mountain range and the city of Pokhara.
Bindabasini Temple: Serving as the focal point for religious activities in the old bazaar area, the Bindhyabasini Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati, a manifestation of Shakti. This temple holds significant religious importance and is a revered site for worship.
In the evening, we will drive to Sarankot, where we will spend the night. Sarankot is situated atop a hill and is renowned as a famous viewpoint for witnessing the stunning sunrise and sunset over the mountains, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Mt. Manaslu. According to legend, it spontaneously emerged when the Kathmandu valley took shape from an ancient lake more than 2,000 years ago. During our tour, we will encounter an impressive stupa adorned with the iconic all-seeing Buddha’s eyes. The presence of prayer flags, tranquil ponds, spinning prayer wheels, shrines, monasteries, and other captivating elements adds to the charm and intrigue of this excursion.
